Common Room: Passionate Discussion of Pop Culture, Food, Fitness, & Fashion!

A few months ago (read: over a year ago) I (Hadas) set out to do another tv show rematch with my Iggle pals.

Rewatch Recap:

We previously rewatched Roswell, the alien teenage romance drama from The WB. Then Freaks and Geeks, a very short-lived cult classic. Next up was Twin Peaks, which divided our hosts. Some were die-hards and others were apprehensive, or just down right angry at it.

What's Next?

The show we decided to watch and rewatch was Veronica Mars. On the panel, this time, were Cassidy, KristyMeghan. Check them out on their own blogs and Twitter accounts!

Veronica Mars is a cult classic yet Kristy and I have never seen it before. We came into it with different ideas of what the show could be and we're both very pleasantly surprised. The show is more mature than it seems. It's well-executed plot wise and by its incredible and underrated cast.

Quick Intro to Veronica Mars' Themes:
  • Mystery
  • Mature Themes
  • Class Divide
  • Racial Issues

What Do You Love about Veronica Mars?

Instead of an in-depth discussion on Twin Peaks listen in to Travis the Grimm and Hadas (that's me!) get nerdy. Sometimes not everything goes according to plan!

When it came time to record our second episode of the Twin Peaks rewatch focusing on season two, one co-host had to miss the recording and the other didn't finish watching the season. Such is the life of podcasting. You really never know what will happen even if you try and plan well or you overcompensate with multiple prepared cohosts.

For a more accurate Twin Peaks discussion, please listen to the IGGPPC rewatch of season one. It features Rosa as a true blue fan of Twin Peaks, Lulu as the first time watcher and immediate hater on the show, and myself, Hadas, as the lukewarm pop culture consumer.

Travis has been a long time friend of the show and one of my absolute favorite people. Where can you find him? Oh boy, don't get me started. Listen to the ep and you'll see that Travis is everywhere doing so much! It's pretty impressive. Heads to his twitter to find links to what he's working on and to make a fantastic new friend. :)

As you know, on Common Room, we are religiously and politically neutral. We'll never post happy holidays for any holiday or support a political candidate as a site/podcast. So, when I asked friends and strangers to be on the show for #Potterweek and got a request to talk about religious allusions, I was a bit nervous.

Stefani, a friend who I met through work suggested this for a reason that was pretty interesting. Stefani and her siblings were not allowed to have Harry Potter in the home.

Stefani has a personal connection that she generously shared. We moved on to talk about bigger Harry Potter themes, favorites, and even took some time to do some sorting and discuss those large introspective questions.

Enjoy this last episode of Potterweek on what I'm calling Potterday. Happy First Day of Hogwarts!!

Check out Stefani- nowhere! She hates the internet! And check out James on social media as thejacksonjd!

More from Potterweek 2016:

7/25 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone movie commentary with Megan Gotch aka The Nerdy Girlie and Katie Elhoffer of Elhoffer Designs. Big kudos to our podcasting intern Kristen!

It's finally here.
The first episode of our Lost rewatch. These episodes will not be on the Common Room feed starting with the second episode.

Frequency: twice a month.

Format:

Introduction of guests:

First timer: Debbie of The Geeky Twin or Rewatchers: Dave of Pop Culture Case Study and Hadas (that's me!).

Recap of the episode:

In the pilot, we meet just a few characters but see glimpses of the larger ensemble cast. All we know is that Oceanic Flight 816 crash landed on an island. The pilot was off course and wasn't able to alert the base.
There's an ominous distress recording made by a French woman. She says it killed them all and she's all alone. It's been looping for 16 years.

Themes We Discuss:

Characterization of Women: Sun, Kate, Claire, and Shannon are 4 distinct personalities. Yet Kate is slightly a different breed in these first two episodes. Many people I know seem to hate Kate. Do you know why?

Characterization of Sayid: This is a post 9/11 show. Casting brown people as terrorists is an easy and popular thing, yet the character of Sayid is granted depth and easy likeability.

Leadership: Who makes a good one? Why? This will be a running theme on our rewatch.

And so we begin.

No need to be afraid of spoilers. They're at the end!

Want to be on the show? You can! Just email me hello@comrom.co and/or join the Facebook group Common Room Lost Rewatch.

Never podcasted before? No problem! I'll teach ya.

Enjoy and namaste.

Villains are always fun to discuss. What makes a good one? The Potter villains are pretty diverse. So diverse we sometimes have to ask "Is X a villain?"

Listen in as Akua and Ashley, both officers of Geek Girl Brunch NYC (also of A Stylish Jedi and You Haven't Seen respectively) chat about Voldie, Umbry, Snapey Snape, and all the other guys.

Here is the upcoming release schedule for Potterweek 2016:

7/25 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone movie commentary with Megan Gotch aka The Nerdy Girlie and Katie Elhoffer of Elhoffer Designs. Big kudos to our podcasting intern Kristen!

JK Rowling created a very detailed and well-plotted story. Yet how come Hogwarts' students miss out on traditional problem solving and critical thinking lessons? Are most wizards idiots?

Jada an officer of Geek Girl Brunch and Julia of our future Lost rewatch podcast episodes suggested we discuss more philosophical issues in Harry Potter. Like how the media works in the wizarding world and what aspects of the muggle world do Wizards actually care about and/or get involved in.

This has been one of my favorite Potterweek records so far. Listen in and let us know what you think!

Relationships in Harry Potter and fun and frustrating. Ginny and Harry make sense on paper, but some people can't stand their pairing. Lily and James together is confusing, but is Lily and Snape any better?

On this fourth Potterweek episode of 2016, I'm joined by Alice aka Kangaru on the interwebs and Kayla of Epicfied from all over the net. Both ladies suggested discussing the romantic relationships in Harry Potter, that they cannot stand!

Which Relationships in Harry Potter

You know that family member you don't get along with? They've got nothing on the Dursleys. Imagine for yourself two humans who show absolutely no love towards an orphaned infant.

On this #Potterweek episode, our guest co-host Kris of No Added Words, suggested we discuss Harry Potter's aunt and uncle. It's our third episode of the week because, in book 3, Aunt Marge's presence shows us a slightly different shade (of purple) of Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia.

What happens when you have a Gryffindor, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff rewatch Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone? For starters, a whole lot of different opinions about the Weasleys.

So how does this work? Simply have you movie ready to press play at around 16-22 seconds. When we say press play, you should be right about where the Privet Drive sign is shown. You may be off a few seconds, but that won't be a problem.

(Editor's note: Shout out to our podcast intern, Kristen, who not only edited this LONG Sorcerer's Stone movie commentary episode, but wrote the show notes as well. Check her out on YouTube!)

Listen as Katie (Elhoffer Design), Megan (The Nerdy Girlie), and Hadas rewatch the first of the Harry Potter films.

What did you think of Sorcerer's Stone?

Check out Megan discussing Military Brat life and blogging on our International Women's Month episode (also featuring Jamilla of Geek Girl Brunch, Straight Outta Gotham, and more).

Check out Katie in her two-parter guest spot on the show discussing her creations, fandoms, and nerd life (part 1 and 2).

Another oldie but a goodie. Back in November, we consumed a bit too much for Non-Fiction November*. One of the documentaries we watched and recorded about just didn't get edited in time.

Listen in as Christine, Debbie, Margaux, and I (Hadas) talk about 20 Feet From Stardom. We look at the documentary in terms of presentation and content.
We also indulge a bit and discuss which award we'd love to win. Where we'd put it. Who we'd love to sing back up for and our first concert experiences.

Share your answers in the comments!

For more information about the women mentioned in this documentary check out the official site.

What is your favorite music documentary?

As mentioned on previous posts, we’ve been watching a few documentaries for our#NonFicNov event. Listen in as we discuss TigGood Hair, and The True Cost.
Also for NonFicNov, Sewing 101!

The ladies are finally getting the flattering geeky threads they always wanted. But what about the guys, eh? Men's Fandom Fashion is the topic for our first episode back from a long hiatus (an explanation is on the episode). This episode was recorded a long time ago. Actually a long long time ago before SWVII was released... /sheepish.

One of our friends from the Con Radio familia, Tony B Kim aka Crazy4ComicCon joined me to talk about a project he's been working on for quite a while. When I spoke to the Con Radio familia about collaborating on an episode together, Tony got very excited about F3.

Tony's project involves creating a line of presentable clothes for men who want to represent their fandoms. Listen in to us chat about the idea, the process, convention love, and more background about Tony.

Check out Tony's podcast, website, and follow him on Twitter for great conversation starters.

Yep, the long awaited fight between the Bat of Gotham and the Son of Krypton was released in March. Reviewers were unkind, fans had mixed opinions, and the stars were defensive.

Joining me (Hadas) were Meghan aka @mesulli on the interwebs and Summer aka @TheFinchery. Check them out on the following sites! Meghan on Girls on the Grid and Summer on The Charming Finch.

SPOILERS ON THE EPISODE
AND IN THIS POST!!!

Here are the topics we discussed:

Expectations for Batman v Superman
The reviews for this film were very opinionated. Did they scare you about the movie before or during your viewing?

--

Diving into Batman v Superman, we discussed the plotlines. As I mentioned on the ep, even while writing this list down I was confused, which is telling about this film.

Questions About Batman v Superman:

Is Lois damsel-ed here? Or is it refreshing to see her jump into all aspects of her job, be brave, and do whatever she wants?

Superhero movies are formulated to lead up to the next film rather than stand alone. Do you think superhero movies are ruined by Hollywood because there's not a lot of room to play with that format?

Share Your Thoughts on Batman v Superman with Us on ComRom.co!

What do you think about when you hear the term indigenous people? I usually think of Native Americans, yet they aren't the only indigenous people on the planet. Only in the last five years did I learn about the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders of Australia.

For International Women's Month, I wanted to make sure we featured as many different nations. I also wanted to create pieces that were a bit meatier so we could get something out of these posts. Luckily Ebony, aka The Travelling Unicorn, was able to help me get to know a group of people I knew just 1 thing about.

Ebony and I discuss Australia's treatment of the aboriginal people, the distinction between the terms indigenous and aboriginal, the reasons behind the mistreatment, how society is changing, and how representation is very slowing improving.

Sonia Liao: Geekery, Art, + Asian American Life

Sonia Liao is the wonderful artist behind Helena Rose which Debbie and I reviewed a few months ago. Read that here and please get the comic, it's beautiful both in art and story.

Sonia and I talked about geekery at first. A bit of X-Men, Man of Steel, and Batman v Superman pre-release. We then talked about gaming, online communities, friendships, and what it was like for her grow up as someone of Asian-descent in America.

Being part of a specific community is something we had in common even though we come from very different backgrounds. There are limitations, benefits, and a learning curve.

Where to Find Sonia Liao:

We met Lynne Yoshii through Emet Comics. She is the artist behind Inside the Loop (our review is coming soon!). I had so much fun talking to her about nerd things we actually spoke for a bit after the ep as well.

Hawaii

Lynne Yoshii was born in Hawaii! I am very jealous of course for Lost reasons.

Her family is Japanese and while she was in Hawaii they made sure she learned the language by enrolling her into a special Japanese-only supplementary school. In fact, she was one of if not the only American residents there.

(Related: Have opinions about Lost? Click here.)

Japanese Culture

To help her connect with the Japanese culture and language, her parents happily indulged any request to buy comics. So Lynne has been very familiar with many types of manga and anime since she was a child and discovered western art as she grew up.

New York

We also discussed what it's like to live in New York.

Where to Find Lynne Yoshii:

Emet Comics, DeviantArt, Facebook, Her Site

Our 3rd International Women's Month episode is with the founder of female and diversity focused, Emet Comics. Maytal Gilboa joins us for about half an hour to chat about the idea behind the company, her upcoming plans, and some general chat.

Maytal Gilboa transitioned from a successful career in film development. Currently, she is coaching a team of women to create stories true to them, without any established agenda.

Check out our coverage of Emet Comics here on CR and their website to stay Inside the Loop. (See what I did there?)

Sometime in 2015, I realized that some of the leaders of the large lady nerd communities I was part of were self-proclaimed military brats. I invited them on the episode and the conversation went in a direction I couldn't have predicted!

Megan Gotch aka The Nerdy Girlie and Jamila Rowser co-founder of Geek Girl Brunch joined me to talk about what military brat-hood was like. Whether they were exposed to other cultures and how. How being an MB helped them create their websites and communities, and help them help themselves.

Jean Barker is a writer, director, and generally a storyteller. Zana, her first comic, is about a South Africa where Nelson Mandela has been killed and apartheid lives on.

Jean and I talked about Zana, her upbringing in South Africa, her writings, her film work, and humanity in general.

We also asked Jean Barker our five Common Room questions about pop culture, food, fitness, fashion, and my signature question.

Surprise! You might have noticed we already did an episode about The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker before. I wanted a do-over and a bit more of an in-depth discussion on the story. #AlltheTales was the perfect time to try again.

A few of the questions we used to form our discussion were lifted straight out of the great online book club, NovelTea Book Club, run by our pal Kristin of My Life as a Tea Cup. Please check this thread out and the book club if you'd like great conversations and book recommendations.

(Related: Kristin was on our episode discussing Amanda Palmer's The Art of Asking!)

Long time listeners and readers probably know that this team LOVES Potter (Potterweek is proof). So it was obviously very fun to have Alohomora co-host and vocal wizard Michael Harle join us on an episode.

We told Michael about #AlltheTales. We mentioned our idea for a Once Upon a Time which really sparked some passion from Mr. Harle. :)

(Related: Kat from Alohomora on WWW: Friendship is Magic, our episode about internet communities.)

Listen in as Estee, Hadas, and Michael discuss ABC's fairy tale adaptation soap opera, Once Upon a Time. Some spoilers for seasons 1-5 and for the film Maleficent.

Fun Facts:
Michael mentioned two predecessors and the probable influences for Once Upon a Time. Fables, a comic series by Vertigo. A game adaptation of Fables from Tell Tale Games. And The 10th Kingdom which was on NBC.

Find Michael here:
Alohomora, Mugglenet Audiofictions, Twitter

Other titles Estee and I came up with for this ep:
Year 1: Michael Harley + the #OUAT Detest
Year 2: Michael Harley + the Repetitive Curse
Year 3: Michael Harley + the Need for Hair Product
Year 4: Michael Harley + the ...
